Yiddish of the Last Litvaks in their Homeland by Dovid Katz, Vilnius Yiddish Institute at Vilnius University
(19 april: symposium 'De wereld van het Jiddisch en andere kleine talen')
For twenty years, Professor Dovid Katz has been leading expeditions in Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia and the "Litvak areas" of northern and eastern Ukraine, northeastern Poland, and neighboring countries, in order to seek out and record the Yiddish and the memories of the oldest Jews in these areas. One result is his work-in-progress atlas, Litvish: An Atlas of Northeastern Yiddish. In his lecture in Leeuwarden on 19 April 2010 he will share a power-point demonstration and some brief video clips of the last Litvaks in the shtetl of their ancestors. He will also tell about some strange experiences and adventures from his years on the road. Professor Katz's websites are: www.dovidkatz.net and www.holocaustinthebaltics.com.
